Article - Talk Material

Category:Resources -> Glossary

“Materials” are the files that make a model.

They are used in two ways in the Modshop.

The first is as a texture for a wall, ceiling, or floor tile.

The second is as a texture for a prop or character model. When working with a prop or model, a “material” is a group of surfaces that will share a texture that is applied. For example, a plain 3D cube will have six sides or six surfaces. If the cube was modeled with individual textures on each surface, the Modshop would create those surfaces as “material [0]”, “material [1]”, on through “material [5]”, and you’d apply a texture to each of the six materials. If, however, when modeled, the cube’s opposing surfaces had the same textures (black on top and bottom, red on the left and right, and blue on the front and back) then the Modshop would only create three surfaces, “material [0]”, “material [1]”, and “material [2]” and applying a texture to one material will apply it to two surfaces.
